The Barrow Group is taking K. Lorrel Manning’s “LOST… FOUND” to Edinburgh this August with…two directors.
People have asked me, “Why do you have two directors?”
Well, we sometimes see things that the other doesn’t. There is sharper awareness in the room when there are four eyes and ears on the project. Sometimes there is strength in numbers. After all, theatre is a collaborative art form.
Of course, it’s important that the person you are working with is, ultimately, on the same page as you. Christine Cirker and I have been working together for so long that we finish each other’s sentences. If you’re open to collaboration, it can work out well.
You never know where a good idea is going to come from. I was doing a project years ago in a regional theater that had some chairs hanging on the back wall as part of the set. A seven-year-old girl happened to attend a run-through. After watching the rehearsal, she gave a fantastic note in the form of a simple question. “Why aren’t you using the chairs on the wall?”
This led to a variety of choices that incorporated the chairs as part of the action, making the production more cohesive and dynamic. You never know where a good idea is going to come from.
You might experiment with various collaborations. Sometimes it’s not productive, but then again, you might just find a dream team that you can work with again and again.
