Class size limited to 6 directors

A comprehensive approach to directing, divided into three sessions, and ending with a showcase production.

Fall Session: Script Analysis Application
In this term, the directors will practice script analysis and sharpen their storytelling skills. We’ll go over an approach to script analysis that provides a clear organizing principle for your direction. Each week we will read scenes, analyze them, and discuss in detail what choices you might make with regards all design elements (Sets, lights, costumes) and staging.

Winter Session:  Communicating with Actors
Directors will cast and stage two scenes. The course will cover audition and interview techniques, rehearsal tools that maximize spontaneity, and communication skills that increase efficiency and help actors and designers perform to the best of their ability. Directors will work in two scenes of their choices. Directors will choose the 10-minute play that will work on in the spring session.

Spring Session: Rehearsal Technique & Showcase
In this term, directors will hold an open audition for Barrow Group students.  Directors will cast and rehearse their 10-minute play under Seth Barrish’s supervision, tech the show, work with a stage manager, and have 3-day showcase run of their production.
