Words from Robert Serrell (MBA, MFA, Coro LNY35)
Executive Director
I first found my way to The Barrow Group back in 2008. I had just finished a graduate acting program, was performing up in Boston, and teaching at Emerson College—but I was terribly in my head. I had so many ideas about acting that I couldn’t get out of my own way.
A buddy of mine said, “Go check out The Barrow Group.” So I started commuting from Boston to New York City once a week to take a class. I thought, Yeah, I’ll just check it out. But after my first class, I was so blown away that I kept coming back.
I had a truly transformative experience—rediscovering a joy in acting—and I just kept showing up. Before I knew it, Seth had offered me a job right out of the Great Recession. I said yes, moved down to New York City, and got started.
Since then, it’s been a wild adventure helping to grow The Barrow Group. Today, it serves more than 10,000 artists, students, and community members each year. It’s incredible to think that the sense of freedom I discovered all those years ago is now being shared with so many others.
Whether you’ve taken one class or been with us for years, you’re part of that same spirit of discovery and freedom.
I’m so grateful to all of you for being part of The Barrow Group community, and to Seth and Lee for creating this beautiful place.
Here’s to the next 40 years.
