
The Barrow Group (TBG) is a nonprofit New York City theatre company dedicated to producing intimate, actor-driven work that feels immediate, alive, and deeply human. Since 1986, TBG has produced more than 70 fully-staged off-broadway productions of which 55 were World, U.S., or New York Premieres.

Founded in 1986, The Barrow Group has spent nearly four decades developing and producing plays that reflect our commitment to simple, spontaneous, and authentic storytelling. From intimate ensemble work to award-winning solo shows, TBG’s productions have championed actor-driven theatre, new work, revivals, and stories that engage deeply with the human experience.
Over the years, TBG has produced acclaimed Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway work, including The Tricky Part, All The Rage, The Temperamentals, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend, Old Wicked Songs, Good, The Timekeepers, The Pavilion, 17 Minutes, and many more.
Awards & Recognition
TBG productions and artists have received major recognition, including Obie, Drama Desk, and Lucille Lortel Awards. In 2005, The Barrow Group received a Drama Desk Award for Off-Off-Broadway Excellence.
Production History by Decade
1980s
The Barrow Group began as a collective of actors committed to exploring a more natural, spontaneous, and truthful approach to performance. Early productions included Seven Short Plays by Joseph Pintauro, On the Wing, When You Comin’ Back Red Ryder?, Serenading Louie, Blue Window, and Three Sisters.
1990s
Throughout the 1990s, TBG developed a reputation for polished ensemble work and emotionally immediate productions. Productions from this period included Thy Kingdom’s Coming, Women of Manhattan, Good, Old Wicked Songs, Trust, Ghost in the Machine, Lonely Planet, Low Level Panic, Tales From Hollywood, God’s Country, Greetings, Walking the Blonde, Split, K2, and The Weather Outside.
2000s
In the 2000s, TBG expanded its production work with new plays, solo shows, and ensemble pieces including Feet of Clay, Short Stuff I, Uncle Vanya, Catechism of Sex, Last Train to Nibroc, Off the Map, Stop Kiss, Sonnets for an Old Century, Lobby Hero, Pentecost, The Fear Project, Spine, The Faithful, The Timekeepers, A Steady Rain, Lonnie-Jake, Phoenix, and The Thickness of Skin.
2010s
The 2010s included a series of acclaimed productions and revivals, including Orange Flower Water, Art, Dying City, Save Me, When I Wished I Was Here, Short Stuff 7, All The Rage, The Unrepeatable Moment, The Pavilion, Abigail’s Party, Enemy of the People, Expecting Isabel, Muswell Hill, The Thing with Feathers, Perp, and The Tricky Part.
2020s
Recent programming has included 17 Minutes by Scott Organ, Restorative Stories, Lost…Found by K. Lorrel Manning, and the 2024 Spring Festival of New Works, featuring Cute Tiny Little Umbrellas, Triptych, Freedom Summer, and Diversion.

Martin Moran’s Obie Award-winning solo play, directed by Seth Barrish, has become one of TBG’s signature productions. The play received two Drama Desk nominations and has been produced and performed around the world.
All The Rage by Martin Moran
Written and performed by Martin Moran and directed by Seth Barrish, All The Rage received the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show.

TBG’s production of Good, directed by Seth Barrish, received strong critical praise, with the New York Post calling it “downright excellent.”
Old Wicked Songs by Jon Marans

17 Minutes by Scott Organ
