Teacher Spotlight: Kate Neuman

Doug GoldringCommunity, Training

We’d love to help you get to know our incredible TBG teaching artists a little bit better, so we got Kate Neuman to answer a few questions! Check out our interview with her below…

What is your favorite class to teach at TBG and why?

KN:  Honestly, I love teaching all classes at TBG – each one has its own particular rewards! In Beginner I, for example, I get to introduce folks to this way of playing and see them get excited about the freedom of bringing just yourself into the work and the incredible pleasure of showing up as we are; in Beginner II, I watch students begin to find their own groove, gain confidence, and build community.

I’m really excited to teach Beginner III for the first time this session: we’ll be exploring one play together in-depth, diving into script analysis and learning how to use it to make our storytelling easier and even more compelling!

What is something you recently learned or were reminded of in the world of acting, writing, or directing?

KN:  I recently saw a film that was written, produced, directed, and acted by dear friends – I know how much work went into the project, how many problems needed to be solved, disasters averted, but what I saw on the screen was simply moving and beautiful; this reminded me that persistence is key, and I think that keeping in mind the joy of the work we’re doing is what buoys our persistence.

We are so lucky to be able to do this thing that is all about sharing and community, that has the possibility of communicating in a unique and profound way. When we get discouraged, we can remind ourselves that there is nothing to lose and so much to gain by daring to keep going.

What is a recent, current, or upcoming project that you’d like folks to know about?

KN:  It’s been a quiet winter, and I’m kind of superstitious, so I don’t talk about future projects. 🙂 Stay tuned, though…
