Teacher Spotlight: Andres Petersen

Doug GoldringCommunity, Training

We’d love to help you get to know our incredible TBG teaching artists a little bit better, so we got Andres Petersen to answer a few questions! Check out our interview with him below…

What is your favorite class to teach at TBG and why?

AP:  I love teaching Beginner II. Very often I have the same students from Beginner I and have a strong connection to them, so I’m able to follow their progress. They are beginning to understand what we do at TBG so their prep work is more complete, and the scene work is more spontaneous. I use a lot of script analysis tools in Beginner II which clarify the scene, and the actors are more relaxed; they understand the story they are telling. I also have to work a bit harder, so that’s more fun for me.

What is something you recently learned or were reminded of in the world of acting, writing, or directing?

AP:  I am constantly reminded of how little we actors need to do when in the moments of a scene. Some of the most successful parts in movies and scenes in class are when actors leave themselves alone or get out of the way and let the words “speak” for themselves. We as an audience know right away when the actors are manipulating the text or delivering the words how they think they should be said. I love it when I don’t see acting!

What is a recent, current, or upcoming project that you’d like folks to know about?

AP:  I’m working on a clown piece and am so excited to be in collaboration with a partner! Creating ten minutes of a good clown piece is really challenging!
