Lee Brock: Magical Moments

Doug GoldringCommunity

I’m sitting at my dining room table reflecting back on this year, looking through my 2024 planner.  In the margins I have written down the scenes that actors do in class – an extraordinary amount of work.  Each class an inspiration. Each class a piece of art. Every class different. They will never happen again the same way.

I’m thinking about all the incredible projects that The Barrow Group produced – K. Lorrel Manning’s Lost…Found; John Yearley’s Triptych; the inaugural reading of Scott Organ’s Diversion; the dozens of readings and artist residencies. I’m reflecting on the audiences’ deep response to the performances, and I’m reminded why bringing people together for a shared experience matters.

A few years ago, I took a yoga workshop with Shiva Rey.  She began by saying, “Instead of thinking of this workshop as three hours, let’s consider that we are going to spend over forty thousand moments together.” That blew my mind. I experienced time in a different way. My mind slowed down, and I began to a have deeper appreciation for the simplest exchanges. My awareness grew sharper and my senses heightened.

Life is made up of so many moments – many of them magical.  I feel deeply fortunate to have witnessed millions of magical moments at the Barrow Group for the last thirty-eight years and, more recently, throughout 2024.

I look forward to the many moments we will share together in 2025. Here’s to more creativity and enlightenment!

Love,
Lee
