Lee Brock: Hold Your Torch Higher

Doug GoldringCommunity

I’m on the phone with a friend.

“How are you?” I ask.

“I’m so anxious that I can’t sleep. I am so afraid for our country. I can’t stop watching the news.”

“Do some yoga, take a bath, and go to bed earlier.”

I’m walking my dog, Trigger, and a neighbor comes up the street.

She starts to cry.

“I can’t believe all of the work I have been doing for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is going down the drain.”

I hug her.

“You have done amazing work for so many years. People have been changed and transformed by your work. Even if you have made one person aware of the definition and value of D.E.I. you have enlightened someone.”

A few days later I hear about the horrific changes at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and I’m stunned. I think, I guess all we can do is continue creating art. Keep leading with our values and taking care of our community.

Historically, tough times have given artists the opportunity to hold their torches higher, to make the path we walk a little brighter. Some of the most meaningful pieces of art ever created have come in the wake of violence, oppression, and unrest.  Art has a unique ability to illuminate and transform lives.

Our arms might get tired, but it’s time to lift our torches.

Love,
Lee
