Arielle Beth Klein: Networking as Community

Doug GoldringCommunity

In the summer of 2021, I auditioned for a short film. I loved the story, the writer/director, and the vibe in the room, but I didn’t book the part.

Cut to summer 2022, when I saw that the short I auditioned for was available to watch on Vimeo. I loved it, and I sent an email to the writer/director congratulating them. (I also attached a new headshot I’d recently had taken.)

Two months later, I get an email reply from them saying thank you, and that they were actually working on their next short and writing it with me in mind to play the lead.

What? I hadn’t even spoken to this person in nearly a year. I guess we were both fans of each other from that initial audition!

Winter 2022 we shoot the second short – a character written for me, no audition required, with an amazing cast and crew.

This is the power (and joy) of authentic networking.

Keep in touch with those people whose hearts and work you admire.

You never know if there’s someone in your acting class or artistic community right now who may one day offer you a job or be someone you yourself want to hire for a project in the future.

When we think of networking as building our creative community, magic can happen.
