These tween classes teach our specific approach to storytelling, and introduces students to the same tools that our adult professional actors work with.
What makes The Barrow Group School different from many other studios in NYC is that all of our teachers have gone through an intensive teacher training program with TBG co-Artistic Directors Seth Barrish and Lee Brock. So when your child takes a class with us, the teacher has trained for years at The Barrow Group in our specific approach.
Explorations in Acting I for Tweens (ages 10-13)
Our Tween Explorations in Acting Class I (ages 10-13) classes encourage spontaneity, simplicity and fun.
The class begins with ensemble building exercises, improvisation games and script analysis. Students then explore The Barrow Group approach and acting tools via scene study. The class culminates in an open class for friends and family to come watch their work.
Explorations in Acting II for Tweens (ages 10-13)
In our Explorations in Acting II class, students will further their script analysis understanding by reading a full play. Students will then take a deeper dive into The Barrow Group tools via working on scenes and monologues from this play. The class builds also builds upon ensemble building and improvisation skills introduced in Explorations I.
The class culminates in an open class for friends and family to watch their work.
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Explorations in Acting Class I.
Film/TV Acting Class for Tweens (ages 10-13)
Our Film/TV Acting Class introduces students to on-camera work by introducing specific acting tools for this medium. The class beings with ensemble building and improvisation, followed by a script analysis overview. Next students are introduced to on-camera terms and and understanding of how a professional set may work. Students then work on scenes, audition technique, and have the opportunity to learn by watching playback of their work.
This class is on-going, and can be taken multiple times.
Prerequisite: If you are new to acting, we recommend starting with our Tween Explorations in Acting Class. If you have previous training, you can start with our Tween Film/TV Acting Class.
Performing Arts School Audition Prep Class for Tweens (ages 10-13 )
Class size limited to 8 students.
This class is designed for tweens who are auditioning for the LaGuardia Performing Arts School, Professional Performing Arts School, Professional Children’s School, Repertory High School, Talent Unlimited High School, Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, Edward R. Murro High School, as well as other performing arts programs.
During this class students will work on:
– Material selection; students will select 1-2 monologues
– Exploring the Barrow Group acting tools
– Audition techniques
– Mock interviews and auditions
– Learn how to successfully set-up, film, and submit a self-tape
Several parent and students meetings are included to answer questions about the audition process.
The goal is for students to leave the class with prepared material and the confidence to do well in their auditions and interviews.
Tween Audition Workshop (ages 10-13)
This class is designed for students who are interested in auditioning for theatre/film/TV work. This class focuses on:
– Monologues – Students will select an audition-appropriate monologue under the guidance of the teacher and prepare the piece while being introduced to The Barrow Group acting tools.
– Mock Auditions – Students will participate in mock auditions with their prepared monologues.
– On-Camera Audition Technique – Students will explore The Barrow Group acting tools to maximize performance for prepared and cold-read auditions.
The goal is for students to leave the class with prepared material and the confidence to do well in their auditions!
This class is ongoing, and can be taken multiple times.
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Tween Explorations I and/or Tween Film/TV.
Musical Theatre Class for Tweens (ages 10-13)
In our Tween Musical Theatre class, students apply the Barrow Group approach and tools to musical theatre material. The focus is on script analysis, how to break down lyrics, find the story of their song, as well as listening to and giving constructive feedback to classmates. Students will work on two songs. For the first, the instructor will select one book scene that goes into a duet/trio/quartet (depending on material). For the second, students will select one solo song. The students will also work with a professional music director. The class culminates in an open class for friends and family to watch their work.
In our tween classes, students are asked to observe fellow classmates and give objective feedback based on what changed/what was different is crucial to the learning process and understanding of The Barrow Group approach.

Improv and Sketch Comedy for Tweens (ages 10-13)
Our Tween Improv and Sketch Comedy class explores improvisation and comedy in a supportive environment. This class encourages students to become more spontaneous, creative, playful, and imaginative, all while developing valuable theater and interpersonal skills.
The class begins with ensemble-building exercises to strengthen the ensemble and encourage positivity as well as enhance listening and reacting skills. Students will then work on Yes…And, short-form games, long-form structures, and character exploration. The class explores sketch comedy by having students explore creating, writing, and acting in their own sketches.
The class culminates in an open class for friends and family to attend.

Shakespeare Acting Class for Tweens (ages 10-13)
Shakespeare’s plays offer actors some of the richest roles in theatre, with characters that explore every facet of the human experience. This course introduces the skills an actor needs to tackle the unique demands of this richly rewarding, classical material. Students will delve into Shakespeare’s texts through script analysis, exploration of language, vocal work, monologues, and scene study. This class teaches our specific approach to storytelling and introduces students to the same tools that our adult professional actors work with.
