Under the guidance of Barrow Group acting teachers, our teen (14-18 yrs) summer intensives introduce students to the Barrow Group approach to acting. These intensives reinforce working with ease, clarity, and simplicity. We believe that to act is to PLAY, and that students learn the most in an atmosphere of relaxed positive reinforcement.
What makes The Barrow Group School different from many other studios in NYC is that all of our teachers have gone through an intensive teacher training program with TBG co-artistic directors Seth Barrish and Lee Brock. So when your child takes a class with us, the teacher has trained for years at The Barrow Group in our specific approach.

This intensive explores:
Acting:
- ensemble building
- script analysis

- on-camera acting and audition technique
- introduction to The Barrow Group acting tools
- rehearsal and performance tools
- culminates in a showing for friends and family to attend
As well as specialty classes which may include:
- speech and voice
- movement
- Alexander Technique
- improvisation
- Shakespeare

No prerequisites or audition required.

*Lunch break is 1-2pm. For the lunch break, teen students (ages 14-18) have the option to stay at TBG or leave TBG (with parent approval).

- mock auditions
- rehearsal and performance tools
- culminates in a showing for friends and family to attend
Students will work on:
- will work in pairs on 1 musical theatre scene and 1 song selected by the instructor
- a solo song of the student's choice
- mock auditions - students will work with the accompanist to develop a 16-bar cut for auditions

Our 1-Week Short Film Intensive explores

Students will work as an ensemble to create original short film. Students will have the opportunity to write, act, direct, and serve as crew for the films.
No prerequisites or audition required.

Our 1-Week Improv and Sketch Intensive explores

- the foundations of improvisation thru games and exercises

Our 1-Week Teen Theatre Design and Production Intensive explores:
- Stage Management
- Set Design
- Sound Design

- Board Operation
Students will explore the fundamentals of theatre design and production via lectures and hands on experience. Students will have the opportunity to put their skills to use by stage managing, designing, and running the board for the Teen Acting and Musical Theatre Intensives Culminating Performances in the TBG Studio Theatre.

Our 1-Week Solo Show Intensive explores:
- Script analysis and story structure
- Idea generation
- Outlining
- Dramaturgy
- Writing, crafting, and performing
- Culminates in sharing a 5-10 minute piece for friends and family.
In this intensive, students will begin crafting, writing, and performing their own solo show. The class begins with an overview of script analysis and story structure. Then, students will work on idea generation and creating an outline of their show for review and dramaturgy. Next, students will continue to draft their solo show while focusing on performance, using The Barrow Group acting tools. The intensive culminates in a sharing of 5-10 minute excerpts of their pieces.
This class is open to all! If you have an idea for a show, great! If not, you'll work on generating an idea!

Prerequisite: This intensive is by invite only. Students must have completed Teen Advanced Scene Study and/or 3-Week Teen Summer Acting Intensive to be considered.

In our 2-Week Performance Ensemble Intensive students will work as an ensemble to develop and perform original material.
The intensive begins with exploring ensemble building and improvisation. Next, students work with a professional writer on writing exercises, developing characters, and workshopping material. The writer will use this as the basis to create an original play. Next, students work with a professional director and begin applying The Barrow Group approach and tools to rehearsals, tech, and performance. The intensive culminates in a sharing in our Studio Theatre for friends and family.

Through writing exercises and collaborative workshops, students will develop original ideas and complete one or more original short screenplays.

Our 1-Week Playwriting Intensive explores:
- the most effective way to tell stories in dramatic form
- script analysis
- study of traditional dramatic structure and exercises
- Students will bring in material to each class to be read and discussed in a teacher-led session where we explore “what story do we hope to tell and is that story being told?
- Through positive feedback, students will work to sharpen and clarify their story, ultimately finding the story that wants to be told.No prerequisites or audition required.
