I wanted to share some exciting news – I have a meaty supporting role in the feature Rubberneck, which will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this Friday! (Nice article about it in Indiewire last Friday: http://bit.ly/IQ4rpa)

I began working on the film in the fall of 2010 and completed filming last December. I know that I definitely applied what I learned in the 2011 fall TV/Film class (taught by the amazing Chris Wells) to the later shoot dates. My new approach was immensely helpful in terms of allowing me to feel relaxed, loose and not focused on certain results.

Interviewer:  ”Another thing that really stood out: your performance. You’re ostensibly playing yourself — which is hard in itself — and you had to balance acting with your duties as a first-time filmmaker. Not the easiest of tasks, I imagine.”

Mike Birbiglia:  ”Pretty early on in the process I brought on Seth [Barrish] who directed plays, my one-man show. He’s a real kind of acting guru. He wrote a book about acting, he’s an artistic director of a theater company in New York called the Barrow Group, so he teaches acting. I really wanted him to guide my performance and really just keep an eye on it. He and I worked together for a long time, we know how each other works and thinks really well. So, my fear during the film and editing the film was not that I would mess up colossally, but that I would mess up in small, key places which would have a ripple effect on the film. Moments where you really have to bring it as an actor to make people believe they’re experiencing this with you. If not, you’re just setting yourself up for people just jumping on your performance. Like, “This is ridiculous! This guy should have gotten another actor!” [Laughs] That kind of thing. So, Seth was extraordinary in that way.”

The Barrow Group Theatre Company is thrilled to announce that Sleepwalk with Me, co-directed by our co-Artistic Director Seth Barrish, has just won the “The Best of Next Audience Award” at the Sundance Film Festival.

Critics are widely praising the film; Entertainment Weekly lists it on their Sundance “Must see” list.

Barrish is co-Founder and co-Artistic Director of the award winning off-Broadway theatre company The Barrow Group and Master Teacher at The Barrow Group School.

The Barrow Group is thrilled to announce that the film version of Mike Birbiglia’s story Sleepwalk With Me will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

The official synopsis:
Reluctant to confront his fears of love, honesty, and growing up, a budding standup comedian has both a hilarious and intense struggle with sleepwalking.

Mike directed the movie, and wrote it with Seth Barrish (who directed the stage version), Joe Birbiglia and Ira Glass. The film stars Mike, Lauren Ambrose, Jim Rebhorn and Carol Kane. It was shot by cinematographer Adam Beckman. Jacob Jaffke produced.
