Craft of the Teaching Artist Program

Ed Bilous, Chair of Juilliard’s Department of Literature & Music Materials recently asked his music students, “How can you make alive the great and transformative power of the arts in your communities, homes, and classrooms? Professor Bilous went on to say, “If you intend on making a career in the arts, part of your life will be in arts education. Part of your life’s work is going to exist offstage as well as onstage. Finding the tools within you to be advocates for the arts is an incredibly important thing.”  –Juilliard Journal OnLine, Vol. XXIV No.8 May 2009

Who or what is a teaching artist? An individual with a passion for their chosen art form as well as an enthusiasm for sharing transformative arts experiences with students of all ages. Theatres, arts organizations, and cultural institutions of all kinds maintain extensive rosters of teaching artists. This course will prepare you to enter this field of artistry and employment.

Jean Taylor has worked for 20 years as a master teaching artist at Lincoln Center, working in local and international settings.

The class focuses on three areas of application that make an effective teaching artist:  (1) how to help a student engage in perceiving art in a deeper way, (2) how to share the basic elements of theatre with students, (3) how to incorporate theatre/acting with other subjects such as History, English, or Math. Discover how the teaching of art richly integrates with the creation of art.

Class size is limited.

“The 21st-century artist will have to be an effective and active advocate for the arts in communities large and small around the nation. By performing superbly in traditional settings and making the effort to engage community members through their artistry, America’s best young artists can positively change the status of the arts in American society.”  –The Artist as Citizen, Joseph W. Polisi, Juilliard President
